Matar Samb, an employee of an EIG service provider, was named the 2020 Safety Champion of Champions. A water fountain technician at the Building & Infrastructure Department, Matar is known as a devoted employee who is committed to upholding workplace safety requirements.

Highly proactive when it comes to workplace safety issues, he has developed a strong sense of safety and promotes it every day, often by sharing his safety-related experience acquired through the large number of inspections that he has conducted as a water fountain technician. He diligently follows procedure and adheres strongly to GCO’s Health & Safety system.

He has considerable self-confidence, which helps him adapt to any work situation, and is always concerned about his own safety and that of his colleagues.

Matar has been evaluated several times by his supervisors during Management Safety Interactions (MSI). He is perfectly aware of the risks of his job in the various mining areas where he works. He enjoys supervising others while ensuring that safety documents (Take 5s, Job Hazard Analyses) and permits are duly filled out before performing his tasks. In addition, he applies the Group’s Essential Safety Requirements every day. He regularly and diligently reports safety-related hazards and at-risk behaviors using the Zero Energy Event (ZEE) tool. Matar is considered by his colleagues to be a model employee and an example to follow when it comes to upholding workplace safety rules and principles. Although he works for a contractor, Matar is just as committed to making GCO a safe workplace as our employees, which makes his nomination all the more special and symbolic – a great example of a worker who is perfectly committed to improving workplace safety.
