On Wednesday morning, Grande Côte Opérations unveiled the new healthcare station it recently built in Diogo-sur-Mer. The two-story building comes fully stocked to allow the future head nurse and his attendants to treat the local population. It can accommodate up to 15 patients.
The healthcare station was constructed at the request of local communities and officials, as the closest station was located 15 km from Diogo-sur-Mer, while the closest healthcare center is 50 km away, in Tivaouane. “We felt it was vital to build this healthcare unit, particularly to reduce home births and neonatal morbidity,” said Christel Bories, CEO of Eramet, who attended the unveiling along with several regional officials from Thiès. “As a socially responsible, civic-minded company that gives back to the community, we are very proud to unveil this healthcare station, which will provide additional well-being to the surrounding population,” she said.
The station, whose 45 million CFA franc ($59,000) budget is entirely covered by the company, supplements the various health-related contributions already made by GCO, including donations of medicines to nine healthcare stations in the area.
Every year, GCO allocates more than 200 million CFA francs to healthcare, education, economic support, and culture. In 2020, this funding benefited more than 6,000 people in the Diogo region.
During the pandemic, GCO also distributed more than 30,000 masks and provided logistical and financial support (more than 500 million CFA francs) to combat Covid-19.
